Fragrant Hills Park
The Chinese name is Xiangshan — incense hills, not perfume. The summit is Incense-Burner Peak: two rocks that read as bronze censers, set in a Jin-dynasty hunting ground Qianlong later rebuilt as Jingyi Garden, then sacked twice by foreign armies. The famous autumn fire is not maple; it is smoke trees, a hillside of Cotinus that turns as if the incense finally caught.

I love God, and I keep finding his glory in beauty: a building that has stood for centuries, light on water, a face at the end of a long day. Photography is how I stop and look. Most of these pictures were made on the road with my family, who are the best part of any trip. What I hope you see here is not my eye but what was already there.
